Meaning
The chemical treatment applied to the mating surfaces of an injection mold represents the technical process used to control plastic flash and improve venting during the molding cycle. This process is governed by industrial manufacturing standards and quality control guidelines administered by the State Administration for Market Regulation in China. Under these engineering frameworks, the parting line micro-etching is used to create a microscopic textured surface on the mold plates where they meet during the clamping phase.
The boundary of this application is confined to the narrow band of the parting line, excluding the main cavity and core areas of the mold. By applying this micro-etching, the toolmaker ensures that trapped air can escape from the cavity while preventing the molten plastic from leaking out and creating defects on the molded part.
Venting Enhancement
High-pressure injection molding forces molten plastic into the mold cavity at high speeds, displacing the air inside. If this air cannot escape, it becomes compressed and causes burn marks or incomplete fill defects on the molded parts. The parting line micro-etching solves this problem by creating micro-grooves that are large enough for air molecules to pass through but too small for the viscous plastic to enter.
The technician applies a chemical acid to the parting line surface to etch these micro-grooves to a precise depth, usually between five and fifteen micrometers. In practice, this process requires high skill to ensure that the etching is uniform and does not compromise the mold’s seal. If the etching is too deep, plastic flash will form along the parting line, requiring manual trimming.
Precision Etching
The etching process must be carefully controlled to prevent damage to the mold’s alignment surfaces and shut-off areas. The toolmaker uses a protective maskant or tape to cover the areas of the mold that should not be etched. This maskant is applied manually or using automated spray equipment, and the exposed steel is then treated with an acid solution.
The parting line micro-etching must be monitored using surface profilometers to verify that the depth and roughness of the etched texture meet the design specifications. When a foreign buyer audits a Chinese mold maker, they inspect the etching fixtures and the chemical control logs to ensure consistent quality. The manufacturer must maintain these records to prove that the process complies with the buyer’s technical standards.
Defect Reduction
Implementing this chemical treatment during the mold-making process leads to a significant reduction in the defect rate during mass production. It allows the injection molding machine to operate at lower clamping pressures, which reduces wear on the machine and the mold itself. By optimizing the venting through micro-etching, factory operators can run the production line at faster cycle times without risking part quality.
This improvement directly increases the output of the factory and reduces the unit cost of the molded parts. In the competitive plastic injection molding industry, the use of advanced parting line treatments is an effective method for achieving high-quality results. This technical detail is a critical point of discussion between foreign engineers and local tooling suppliers.
