Meaning
The re-establishment of the certified status of an industrial production line is executed after major modifications, repairs, or extended shutdowns have occurred. This line requalification demonstrates that the production system still generates outputs that conform to the original specifications. It bridges the gap between mechanical restoration and commercial production by providing documented evidence of process capability.
Verification Procedure
Engineering teams run a predefined number of test batches using standard operating conditions to collect performance data. During line requalification, these test batches are monitored using statistical process control methods to verify that the machines operate within their statistical limits. All critical parameters, such as temperatures, cycle times, and pressures, are recorded and compared to historical baselines.
This step ensures that no drift has occurred during the idle period.
Performance Index
Calculating process capability indices, such as Cpk, provides the mathematical justification for resuming normal operations. A minimum Cpk value of one point thirty-three is typically required before the line requalification is considered successful. This mathematical threshold guarantees that the line is capable of producing parts within the designated tolerance limits with a very low defect rate.
Process Limit
A single major failure during the test run invalidates the entire sequence. If a machine malfunctions or a sample falls outside the tolerance limits, the engineering team must identify the root cause, apply corrective actions, and restart the test from the beginning.
