Meaning
Thermal analysis techniques measure the temperature variation across different areas of a workpiece as it moves through a heating process. Performing thermal gradient profiling is essential to ensure that all parts of a complex printed circuit board reach the required temperature for solder reflow without overheating sensitive components. This technique uses data loggers equipped with thermocouples attached to specific points on a sample board.
Sensor Placement
Thermocouples are typically placed on large components with high thermal mass and on small components that heat up quickly. Accurate thermal gradient profiling requires these sensors to be securely attached with high temperature solder or conductive adhesive. The goal is to capture the widest possible range of temperatures that the board will experience during the oven cycle.
Peak Temperature
The profile shows the rate of temperature rise and the duration of the soak phase. If thermal gradient profiling reveals a difference that is too large, some joints may stay cold while others are damaged by heat. This delta must be kept within the limits specified by the solder paste and component manufacturers to ensure a reliable outcome.
Reflow Optimization
Adjustments to the oven zones are based on the results of the profile. Periodic thermal gradient profiling is a standard requirement for process validation in electronic manufacturing services across China. These records prove that the production environment consistently meets the thermal requirements for the specific products being assembled.
