Meaning
Low pressure molding process utilizing liquid resins and silicone tools allows for the creation of high quality plastic parts in small batches. Manufacturers select polyurethane casting for prototypes or bridge production because it replicates the properties of injection molded plastics at a fraction of the tooling cost. The process involves mixing two chemical components and pouring them into a vacuum chamber to remove air bubbles.
This method stops being cost effective when production volumes reach hundreds of units.
Chemical Reaction
Polymerization of the two liquid parts occurs inside the mold at room temperature or slightly elevated temperatures. In polyurethane casting, the choice of resin determines the final hardness, color and transparency of the part. Technicians can choose from a wide range of materials that mimic the behavior of ABS, nylon or elastomers.
The curing time varies from a few minutes to several hours depending on the chemical formulation.
Surface Fidelity
Accuracy of the surface detail is a primary advantage of this manufacturing technique. Because the liquid resin has a low viscosity before curing, polyurethane casting captures extremely fine textures and sharp edges from the master pattern. This makes it an ideal choice for high fidelity models in the consumer electronics and automotive sectors.
The finished parts are often indistinguishable from mass produced components.
Regulatory Environment
Safety and environmental standards in China govern the handling of the chemical precursors used in this process. Facilities must comply with the GBZ 2.1 standard for occupational exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. Waste management protocols for uncured resins are strictly enforced by local environmental protection bureaus.
Proper ventilation and personal protective equipment are required to ensure the health of the operators during the casting process.
