Meaning
Pre-hardened tool steel specialized for plastic injection molding provides high thermal conductivity and excellent polishing characteristics for high quality finishes. Manufacturers use nak80 steel for cavities that require a mirror surface or a very fine texture. The material is delivered at a hardness of approximately forty on the Rockwell C scale, eliminating the need for post machining heat treatment.
This alloy is not suitable for molds that will process highly corrosive or extremely abrasive resins.
Metallurgical Property
Chemical composition of this alloy includes nickel, aluminum and copper to facilitate age hardening. Because nak80 steel is refined using vacuum degassing, it possesses a very clean internal structure with few impurities. This uniform density ensures that the material responds consistently to electric discharge machining.
Stable performance during the cutting process reduces the risk of tool breakage or dimensional error.
Surface Clarity
Polishing to a high gloss is the primary reason for selecting this specific grade of steel. In the production of transparent parts, nak80 steel allows for a finish that is free of pinholes or streaks. The fine grain structure supports the application of complex textures via chemical etching.
Molds made from this material are frequently used for premium consumer electronics and optical components.
Procurement Standard
Industrial buyers in the Chinese market often specify this material in contracts for high precision tooling. While nak80 steel is a proprietary grade developed in Japan, it is widely available through authorized distributors in major manufacturing hubs. Compliance with the GB/T 1299 standard for tool steels ensures that the material meets the necessary mechanical benchmarks.
Verification of the material certificate is a standard step in the tooling approval process.
