Meaning
Mechanical evaluation procedures that apply a uniform bending moment across a central span of a material specimen provide data on flexural strength and modulus. Unlike other methods that concentrate force at a single point, the four point bend test creates a large area of constant stress between the inner loading pins. This setup allows for a more accurate assessment of the material properties of brittle ceramics and silicon wafers.
Loading Mechanism
Two upper pins apply downward force while two lower pins support the specimen from below. The distance between these supports determines the distribution of the tension and compression within the sample.
Surface Sensitivity
Small cracks or flaws on the underside of the test piece will propagate quickly under the applied load. Testing labs in the Yangtze River Delta use this method to verify the quality of glass substrates used in mobile phone displays.
Quality Standard
Compliance with GB/T 9341 ensures that the results are accepted by domestic regulatory bodies and international customers. The final report must include the dimensions of the sample and the speed at which the load was applied. Accurate data from these tests prevents the use of substandard materials in high pressure environments.
