Meaning
Structural separation at the boundary between insulating layers and conductive elements represents a primary cause of electrical breakdown in high density interconnects. When the adhesive force between the polymer and the metal is weaker than the internal stresses, dielectric interface failure creates a path for moisture and contaminants. This separation leads to short circuits or signal degradation in the final product.
Stress Factor
Thermal cycling induces mechanical loads because the metallic and non metallic components expand at different rates. If the assembly undergoes repeated temperature swings from negative forty to one hundred degrees Celsius, the interface eventually fatigues.
Inspection Control
Non destructive testing using scanning acoustic microscopy identifies voids at the interface before they cause a total system shutdown. Chinese quality standards for automotive electronics require these inspections for every batch destined for safety critical applications. Failure to meet these criteria results in the immediate rejection of the entire lot by the State Administration for Market Regulation.
Legal Liability
Contracts between material suppliers and assembly houses often define the specific point where responsibility for a bond failure begins. If the failure originates from poor surface preparation at the factory, the assembly house bears the cost of the recall. When the issue stems from a chemical defect in the dielectric itself, the supplier must provide compensation under the Product Quality Law of the People’s Republic of China.
