Meaning
A physical or digital containment process used to separate semi-finished goods that fail quality checks from the main production line. This work-in-progress isolation prevents the accidental assembly of defective components into the final product and ensures that suspected batches are held for further inspection. The protocol remains in effect until a formal disposition, such as rework or scrap, is authorised by the quality manager.
Red Segregation
Red bins or fenced areas with restricted access are used to store the quarantined materials on the factory floor. Each container is marked with a hold tag that details the part number, the quantity, the batch code and the nature of the defect. This visible barrier alerts staff that the items are not to be moved or processed without specific clearance.
Electronic Tracking
Electronic systems for manufacturing execution lock the serial numbers of the affected parts in the database to block any further scanning at subsequent workstations. The software prevents the closing of a production order if a linked component is currently in a held status. Automated alerts are sent to the procurement team if the delay in parts will impact the shipping schedule.
Materials Outcome
Materials are released back to the line only after a documented repair or a waiver is signed by the engineering department.
