Meaning
Loss of protective metal coatings or surface treatments through chemical reactions with process liquids or environmental agents defines a critical reliability concern in electronics manufacturing. Surface finish dissolution is the chemical process whereby a thin surface layer dissolves into a molten solder or liquid chemical during assembly or operation. This process must be controlled to prevent the exposure of underlying base metals.
Chemical Mechanism
Molten solder alloys interact with the metal plating of a printed circuit board to form intermetallic compounds. The rate of surface finish dissolution depends on solder temperature, contact time, and the solubility of the finish metal in the solder alloy. For instance, gold or silver platings dissolve rapidly into tin-based solders, leaving the solder to bond directly with the underlying nickel barrier layer.
Controlling the thermal profile of the reflow oven is therefore essential to prevent excessive metal loss.
Quality Parameter
Process engineers establish strict limits on the thickness of metallic coatings to ensure reliable solder joint formation. When surface finish dissolution occurs too quickly or goes to completion, it can deplete the protective layer entirely, leading to solder joint embrittlement or corrosion. This depletion is particularly dangerous in high-reliability applications where electronic assemblies must withstand prolonged thermal cycling.
Regular metallurgical cross-sectioning is used to monitor the remaining plating thickness during production run trials.
Yield Retention
Optimization of plating chemistry and solder alloy composition prevents the premature failure of the electronic assembly. If surface finish dissolution is not carefully managed, the resulting weak solder joints can fail during transport, mechanical testing, or field operation, causing expensive product recalls and warranty claims. Manufacturers use specific barrier layers such as electroless nickel to slow down the dissolution process and maintain structural integrity.
This design strategy ensures high assembly yields and extends the operational lifetime of the electronic products in harsh environments. Proactive monitoring of the chemical process parameters during board fabrication is the most reliable way to prevent plating failures and ensure long-term product dependability. Reliable plating design protects both product quality and corporate reputation.
