Meaning
A destructive mechanical evaluation method measures the time it takes for a material to break under a constant load at a specific and elevated temperature. This stress rupture testing is a mandatory requirement for the certification of materials used in the manufacture of high-pressure and high-temperature equipment in China. It provides a direct measure of the load-carrying capacity of the alloy over long periods, which is essential for determining the safety factors in engineering designs.
The test stops when the sample physically separates into two pieces, and the total duration is recorded as the rupture life. This data is used to establish the allowable stress levels for industrial components in the national GB standards for pressure vessels and boilers.
Mechanical Evaluation
Manufacturers of industrial alloys must maintain a rigorous testing program to ensure that their products meet the performance specifications required by their customers. The stress rupture testing involves the placement of a standardized specimen in a furnace where it is subjected to a precise weight for hundreds or thousands of hours. The temperature must be kept within a very narrow range to ensure the accuracy of the results, as a small increase can significantly shorten the life of the sample.
This evaluation provides the data needed to create the creep-rupture master curves that are used by designers to predict the lifespan of critical parts. Any deviation from the specified testing protocol can lead to the rejection of the material and the loss of the quality certification for the production facility.
Laboratory Accreditation
Measurement of the long-term properties of materials must be performed in laboratories that are authorized by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment. The stress rupture testing requires specialized equipment that is regularly calibrated to ensure the reliability of the data. Technicians must follow the procedures described in the GB/T 2039 standard for the testing of metallic materials.
These labs are subject to regular audits by the administrative authorities to verify that they are maintaining the necessary technical standards. A failure to pass an audit can lead to the suspension of the lab’s license and the invalidation of any test reports issued by the facility. This oversight is intended to protect the integrity of the national quality system and to ensure that only safe materials are used in the Chinese industry.
Product Certification
Sale of high-temperature components to the energy and chemical sectors requires a formal certificate of conformity issued by a recognized third-party agency. The results of the stress rupture testing are the primary evidence used to support the safety claim for the material. This certificate must be included in the technical dossier that accompanies the product and is reviewed by the State Administration for Market Regulation.
For foreign manufacturers, the testing must often be repeated in a Chinese laboratory to satisfy the local regulatory requirements. This process can be time-consuming and expensive, but it is necessary to gain access to the Chinese market. The administrative practice involves the verification of these test results during the inspection of the equipment at the installation site.
Failure to provide the required creep-rupture data can result in the immediate shutdown of the project and the imposition of a ban on the use of the equipment. The final approval for the operation of a high-pressure system depends on the successful completion of these tests for every batch of material used in its construction.
