Meaning
Change in the volume occupied by one mole of a substance as its chemical composition or temperature changes during processing or phase transformation. In high-precision molding operations, molar volume variation must be modeled to calculate the final shrinkage of the molded components. The Standardization Administration of China (SAC) sets the testing standards to determine the thermal expansion and density of engineering plastics.
This parameter applies to homogeneous single-phase regions but does not account for the additional volume changes associated with porous structures or composite interfaces.
Dimensional Control
Density measurements conducted using Archimedes’ principle or helium pycnometry provide the empirical data to calculate the volume of the substance. During phase transformation, molar volume variation induces internal stresses that can warp the molded component if the cooling cycle is too fast. Process technicians use these density profiles to adjust the injection pressure and cooling rates.
This optimization ensures that the final component matches the dimensional tolerances required by the client.
Compliance Certification
Automotive safety standards under the China Compulsory Certification (CCC) scheme mandate that polymer brackets must not deform under extreme operating temperatures. To satisfy these requirements, manufacturers submit their material specifications, including molar volume variation datasets, to state-designated test centers. These centers verify that the thermal expansion does not compromise the mechanical assembly.
A failure in these tests prevents the component from receiving the CCC mark, which legally bars the vehicle from being sold or used in China.
Customs Tariffing
Customs declaration disputes occasionally arise when the imported material’s density changes during transport due to temperature-induced phase changes. The General Administration of Customs (GACC) uses precise laboratory testing to verify that the imported material’s density matches the chemical composition declared on the customs entry sheet. When molar volume variation causes the physical state or density of the material to shift, the GACC may reclassify the cargo under a different tariff code.
Importers must resolve these issues by submitting a technical dossier containing verified laboratory analyses to the customs authority, or face substantial fines for incorrect declarations. This administrative dispute can delay the release of the cargo for several weeks, costing the importing enterprise significant demurrage fees.
