Meaning
Portable diagnostic instruments measure the elemental composition of metal alloys directly on the factory floor without damaging the sample. Utilizing a handheld XRF analyser allows inspectors to quickly verify the alloy grade of raw materials and finished components during on-site quality audits. This non-destructive testing method identifies the presence of metals such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper within seconds.
Radiation Assessment
The device emits high-energy X-rays that displace electrons from the inner shells of the atoms in the metal sample. In this manner, the handheld XRF analyser calculates the concentration of each element by measuring secondary emitted rays.
Receiving Inspection
Quality control teams use portable spectrometers at the warehouse dock to audit incoming material against the supplier’s test certificates. This routine inspection with a handheld XRF analyser detects issues before the steel is processed, preventing costly machining errors or product failures.
Measurement Accuracy
Although highly effective for heavy elements, this method struggles to detect light elements such as carbon, beryllium, or aluminum. The handheld XRF analyser cannot replace stationary optical emission spectrometers when precise carbon content is required to confirm a specific steel grade. Furthermore, surface contaminants like rust or paint can distort the results, which requires technicians to prepare the test area by sanding it down to bare metal.
This limit means that while it is useful for screening, laboratory testing is still needed to resolve formal disputes.
