Meaning
Solidification of the thermoplastic material at the narrow entry point of a mold cavity represents the transition from the packing phase to the cooling phase of the injection cycle. Once gate freeze occurs, no additional plastic can be squeezed into the mold, meaning the weight of the part becomes locked. This physical transition determines the dimensional stability and the final shrinkage of the molded component.
Technicians run a weight study to determine the exact moment this barrier is achieved.
Solidification Timing
Graphic plots of part weight versus holding time reveal the precise second when the entry channel becomes solid. Before gate freeze, increasing the holding pressure or the holding duration forces more material into the cavity to offset thermal contraction. If the hold pressure is removed before this solidification occurs, molten plastic flows back out of the cavity into the runner system.
This backflow creates voids and sinks that ruin the cosmetic finish of the piece. Technicians use this curve to establish the baseline parameters for the quality department to track during high-volume production.
Operational Control
Machine settings must adjust the packing time to match or slightly exceed the freeze time of the gate. If operators set the holding time shorter than required, the gate freeze point is never utilized to stabilize the part weight, which results in high variation across shots. Conversely, keeping the holding pressure active long after solidification completes only wastes energy and increases the overall cycle time.
The optimization of this setting forms the foundation of consistent molding processes.
Defect Mitigation
Part dimensions stay within tolerance when gate freeze is reached uniformly across all cavities of a multi-cavity tool. Unbalanced cooling lines or mismatched gate sizes can cause different cavities to solidify at different times. This imbalance generates weight discrepancies and warp issues in the finished batch.
Adjusting the coolant flow represents the standard remedy for uneven cooling rates.
