Meaning
Dehumidification mechanism removes moisture from processed air through continuous adsorption. A desiccant wheel contains a porous substrate coated with silica gel or molecular sieve material that rotates through two separate air streams. This rotation allows one sector of the device to capture moisture from incoming air while another sector is dried by a heated exhaust stream.
Operational Mechanism
Saturated zones must undergo thermal regeneration to restore their moisture-absorbing capacity. Process air passes through the main section of the desiccant wheel where water vapor is collected on the active material. Concurrently, a smaller portion of the wheel rotates into the reactivation sector where a counter-current flow of hot air, typically heated between one hundred and one hundred and forty degrees Celsius, evaporates the trapped water and discharges it outdoors.
This continuous cycle maintains a constant dew point in the treated space.
Industrial Application
Manufacturing plants with strict environmental control rely heavily on this technology. In dry-room facilities for lithium-ion battery assembly, the desiccant wheel is configured to achieve an ultra-low dew point of minus forty degrees Celsius. This precise moisture control prevents the chemical decomposition of electrolyte materials during the assembly phase.
Performance Metric
Efficiency depends on the rotation speed and the regeneration temperature. Operators measure the moisture removal rate to determine when the active desiccant coating has degraded and requires replacement.
