Meaning
Dimensional design variables define the allowable deviation between the nominal CAD model dimensions of an injection mold cavity and the final molded plastic part. Establishing correct cavity shrinkage tolerances is essential for compensating for the natural contraction of polymers as they cool. The mold maker must calculate these values based on the specific resin density and grade to avoid producing out-of-specification components.
Dimensional Variance
Different thermoplastic resins exhibit distinct rate ranges during cooling, with crystalline materials contracting more than amorphous polymers. Unreinforced polyamides, for instance, contract at a different rate than glass-filled alternatives. Mold designers adjust the tool dimensions using a scaling factor, but non-uniform wall thickness causes regional variation.
This behavior forces the designer to apply localized adjustments to ensure uniform parts.
Industrial Control
Precision manufacturing requires the tool maker to machine the mold cavity to the upper limit of the allowable scale. This material-safe approach allows the mold to be modified if the first samples run oversized, since steel can be removed more easily than added. Tool builders measure the resulting test parts using coordinate measuring machines to verify compliance.
Adjustments are then machined into the steel to correct any remaining deviance.
Contractual Margin
Purchase agreements between global buyers and Chinese injection molding manufacturers define acceptable deviations in final part dimensions to manage production risks. These clauses establish that the manufacturer is liable for retooling if the samples fall outside the specified limits after a defined number of test shots. Tooling drawings must clearly state the shrinkage factor applied to prevent disputes during the mold qualification process.
When shrinkage is not controlled, parts fail to assemble correctly, causing delays. This dispute is avoided by documenting the resin datasheet, melt temperature, and gate design before steel is cut. Any deviation from these pre-approved parameters invalidates the tolerance agreement.
