Meaning
Physical force measurements quantify the air removal capacity of a system used to secure substrates or materials during a manufacturing process. Monitoring vacuum drawdown pressure is critical in processes like dry film lamination or stencil printing where a lack of suction leads to material movement or air pockets. The measurement is usually taken at the interface between the pump and the vacuum table or chamber.
Seal Integrity
Any leakage in the gaskets or hoses will immediately reduce the effective suction at the workpiece. Maintaining the correct vacuum drawdown pressure requires regular cleaning of the vacuum ports to prevent the buildup of debris or adhesive residue. In high humidity environments, moisture can also affect the performance of the vacuum pumps and the quality of the seal.
Hold Strength
The pressure must be high enough to overcome the mechanical forces applied by a squeegee or a lamination roller during every stage of the cycle. If vacuum drawdown pressure is insufficient, the board or film may shift and cause registration errors that cannot be corrected later in the process. Digital pressure switches are often used to provide a real time alert if the suction falls below a preset threshold.
Operational Limit
Every machine has a defined range of pressure that ensures the safe and accurate handling of the material. In Chinese industrial standards for electronics equipment, vacuum drawdown pressure is a monitored parameter. Failure to maintain this pressure results in increased scrap rates and lower overall production efficiency.
