Meaning
Non-destructive testing method uses a multi-element transducer to transmit and receive acoustic waves at varying angles to inspect weld joints and detect internal material defects. Industrial inspectors use ultrasonic phased array to inspect pipeline welds and aircraft composites for cracks and delamination. This acoustic analysis stops applying when the material being inspected is extremely porous or contains large grain structures, such as cast iron, which scatter the ultrasonic beams and scramble the signals.
Sectorial Scanning
Electronic beam steering allows the acoustic wave to sweep through a range of angles without moving the physical probe. When utilizing ultrasonic phased array, the system generates real-time cross-sectional images that show the depth and orientation of internal flaws. This capability makes it easier for operators to pinpoint the location of sub-surface cracks in complex joint geometries.
Inspection Advantage
High-speed data acquisition and comprehensive defect sizing represent the primary benefits of using multi-element testing over traditional single-probe methods. By deploying an ultrasonic phased array, a testing lab can complete inspections much faster because a single pass of the probe covers a wide area. This efficiency reduces the downtime of manufacturing plants and allows for rapid inspection of steel structures.
Operational Constraint
Equipment complexity and the requirement for highly trained calibration operators represent the primary limitations of advanced acoustic scanning systems. To perform an ultrasonic phased array inspection, technicians must configure focal laws and gate settings that are specific to the material thickness and probe frequency. This configuration process is time-consuming and requires specialized software that must be updated regularly.
In addition, the initial cost of the multi-element transducers and the associated processing hardware is several times higher than that of conventional ultrasound equipment, restricting its use to high-value manufacturing and critical infrastructure projects.
