Meaning
Industrial heating equipment utilizing a series of driven ceramic rollers continuously moves material through a long heated chamber. This roller hearth kiln is widely used in the mass production of battery cathode materials and ceramic tiles. The continuous movement ensures that every sagger or tile receives uniform heat exposure as it progresses through the different temperature zones of the furnace.
This automated design reduces labor costs and improves product consistency compared to batch ovens.
Mechanical Design
Driven rotating rollers made of high strength alumina or silicon carbide span the width of the furnace to support the product trays. In a roller hearth kiln, the rotation speed of these rollers is precisely controlled by variable frequency drives to manage the dwell time of the material in each heating zone. The mechanical drive system is situated outside the hot zone to prevent thermal damage to the bearings and motors.
This external placement ensures reliable operation over long production campaigns.
Thermal Control
Multi zone heating elements located above and below the roller bed provide precise control of the temperature profile. In a roller hearth kiln, the chamber is divided into preheating, firing, and cooling zones, each equipped with its own thermocouples and gas injection ports. This zoning allows the factory to establish a specific heating curve required for the synthesis of advanced cathode powders.
The control system adjusts the power output of the individual heating elements to maintain the desired temperature profile.
Production Capacity
Continuous throughput enables factories to achieve high volume outputs necessary to meet industrial demand. The design of the roller hearth kiln allows for a constant stream of materials to be processed without the downtime associated with heating up and cooling down batch furnaces. This makes it the preferred furnace for high-capacity lithium-ion battery material production facilities.
