Meaning
Non-destructive testing methods used to verify the elemental composition of metal alloys ensure that correct materials are used during industrial manufacturing. Positive material identification employs portable analyzers to identify alloy grades on-site without damaging the finished component. In China, industrial inspection agencies utilize this method during the construction of chemical reactors and oil pipelines where material mixing represents a high risk.
This procedure is regulated by national standards like GB/T 20066, which guides the sampling and analysis of steel.
Technical Mechanism
Portable analyzer technologies typically utilize hand-held X-ray fluorescence or optical emission spectrometry to measure the surface chemistry of the metal. The analyzer emits a low-energy radiation beam that excites the atoms in the metal sample, causing them to emit characteristic X-rays. By measuring the energy and intensity of these X-rays, the instrument’s internal computer calculates the exact percentage of alloying elements like chromium, nickel, and molybdenum within seconds.
This calculation is automatically matched against a database of known alloy grades to provide immediate feedback to the technician.
Field Verification
Executing on-site inspections is critical during the assembly of complex piping systems or pressure vessels to ensure that every welded component is made of the specified material grade. Technicians perform scans directly on the raw metal, weld joints, and fasteners before the system is put into service. This direct inspection catches errors such as the accidental use of carbon steel bolts instead of alloy steel bolts, which could lead to rapid corrosion and failure under operating conditions.
Any part that fails the scan is marked and removed from the assembly line immediately.
Quality Records
Maintaining reliable records of these inspections provides a strong audit trail for safety compliance and material certification. The digital report generated by the portable device includes the date, time, alloy grade, and the percentage breakdown of each element, signed by the certified inspector. For large-scale construction projects in China, the Special Equipment Licensing regulations demand that these test records be presented to government inspectors before a facility is licensed to operate.
This documentation protects the facility operator from legal liability and confirms that all materials meet the design specifications. The logs must be archived for the lifetime of the equipment to support future maintenance audits. Furthermore, the record must specify the serial number of the testing instrument and its calibration date to validate the accuracy of the measurements during any subsequent legal or insurance inquiries.
