Meaning
Standardized methodology for measuring the mechanical strength of adhesive bonds and solder joints in printed circuit boards. Quality control labs perform ipc-tm-650 shear testing to determine the force required to break a component away from its mounting pad. The test provides a quantitative value for the integrity of the surface mount assembly.
Bond Strength
A motorized stylus applies a lateral load to the side of a component until the attachment fails. The ipc-tm-650 shear testing procedure specifies the height at which the tool must strike the component to ensure repeatable results. Higher shear values generally indicate better wetting and a healthier metallurgical bond.
Quality Verification
Manufacturing batches are sampled periodically to ensure the reflow process remains within specification. If the ipc-tm-650 shear testing reveals a drop in strength, it may indicate contamination on the pads or an incorrect temperature profile. These results are recorded as part of the formal quality management system.
Mechanical Evaluation
Different component sizes require different minimum force thresholds to pass. Because larger components have more surface area, ipc-tm-650 shear testing must account for the specific geometry of the part being tested. The test remains a fundamental tool for verifying that the production line is capable of producing durable electronics.
