Meaning
Electrical property measuring the opposition to current flow at the junction of two conductors defines the efficiency of a connection. High levels of contact resistance lead to localized heating and voltage drops that compromise circuit performance. This measurement includes the resistance of the contact material itself and the resistance of any surface films or oxides.
Measurement Protocol
Measurement occurs through the four-wire Kelvin method to eliminate the influence of lead wire resistance. Small test currents prevent the electrical breakdown of thin oxide layers that might mask the true state of the interface. Results are expressed in milliohms.
Proper probe placement ensures the reading reflects only the interface of the connector pins.
Interface Degradation
Surface contamination or environmental oxidation increases the resistivity at the contact point over time. Mechanical wear during repeated mating cycles removes protective plating and exposes base metals to air. Vibration causes small movements that create debris and further elevate the resistance.
Corrosive gases in industrial environments accelerate this process.
Legal Standard
Chinese national standard GB/T 5095.2 specifies the test procedures for evaluating these electrical components. Manufacturers must provide data showing the stability of the connection under various environmental stresses. Testing laboratories must hold accreditation from the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment.
Validated reports are necessary for components used in telecommunications infrastructure. Authorities enforce these limits to prevent fires in high-current power distribution systems.
