Meaning
Electroplated or electroless metallic films situated between copper base conductors and surface finish coatings act as physical diffusion blocks. Printed circuit board manufacturers and electronic component packagers apply a nickel barrier layer to prevent rapid solid-state interdiffusion between copper and tin or gold finishes. This metallic barrier inhibits the migration of copper into tin-lead or lead-free solders, suppressing the unchecked growth of brittle intermetallic phases like Cu6Sn5.
The layer’s operational boundary terminates when microstructural defects, pinholes, or hyper-corrosion break down its continuous diffusion resistance. It functions as an intermediate barrier, requiring an external solderable or wire-bondable top coat to preserve assembly performance.
Deposition Metallurgy
Electrodeposition setups deposit nickel from Watts or sulfamate baths under controlled temperature, pH and cathodic current density levels. Sulfamate formulations yield lower internal tensile stress, which stops cracking or blistering under thermal shock. Electroless nickel immersion gold processes use hypophosphite reducing agents, yielding a nickel-phosphorus alloy with phosphorus concentrations between seven and ten percent.
This phosphorus content controls the barrier’s grain morphology and corrosion resistance during final assembly.
Regulatory Verification
Electroplating lines must comply with environmental emissions thresholds set by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment under GB 21900 discharge standards. Chemical safety certifications for nickel sulfate and plating additives require regular validation against dangerous chemical registrations. The State Administration for Market Regulation audits finished printed board finishes against GB/T 19355 and GB/T 4677 product quality rules.
Plating facilities failing local wastewater inspections face administrative shutdowns and enterprise environmental credit downgrades that halt supply operations.
Solderability Failure
Thin or discontinuous nickel barriers allow copper to migrate through to the solder connection, generating copper-tin intermetallics that fracture under mechanical shock. Excessive gold bath exposure in electroless processes causes hyper-corrosion, creating microscopic black pad defects along the nickel interface. Solder applied over oxidized nickel fails to spread cleanly, elevating contact resistance and causing joint detachment during environmental stress testing.
Regular plating thickness checks with X-ray fluorescence confirm barrier continuity across delicate terminal geometries.
