Meaning
Security architecture that physically or logically isolates a domestic cloud environment from all external networks, including the public internet and international company intranets. Domestic cloud air gapping is a strategy used by organizations in the People’s Republic of China to protect critical information and to comply with the most stringent data localization and security requirements. This approach ensures that sensitive data cannot be accessed, leaked, or modified by any entity outside of the designated secure zone.
It is particularly common in sectors such as national defense, aerospace, and critical infrastructure where the risk of cyber espionage or sabotage is highest. The boundary of the air gap is the point at which all electronic communication with the outside world is terminated. Any data transfer across this boundary must be done through highly controlled and audited physical media or one way data diodes.
Infrastructure Isolation
Physical separation of the hardware and networking equipment from any other corporate or public infrastructure is the foundation of this security model. Domestic cloud air gapping requires a dedicated data center with its own power supply, cooling, and security personnel. The servers and storage devices are not connected to any routers or switches that have a path to the outside world.
This prevents the use of standard remote management tools and requires all administrative tasks to be performed on site by authorized personnel. The isolation also extends to the software layer, where the operating systems and applications must be updated using a sneakernet approach. This involves scanning all updates on a separate secure machine before manually moving them to the air gapped system.
Connection Protocol
Operational rules for moving data into or out of the isolated environment are extremely restrictive and require multiple levels of authorization. Domestic cloud air gapping often utilizes a data bridge or a secure gateway that allows for a controlled exchange of information under strict supervision. For example, a one way data diode might be used to allow status reports to be sent out while preventing any incoming commands from entering the system.
Every piece of data that crosses the air gap is subjected to a deep packet inspection and a malware scan to ensure that no malicious code is introduced. These transfers are also recorded in a tamper proof audit log that is reviewed regularly by the security team. This protocol ensures that the isolation is not compromised by a single point of failure or a human error.
Data Sovereignty
Legal and strategic objective of the air gapping strategy is to ensure that the state and the organization maintain absolute control over the information. Domestic cloud air gapping is a response to the threat of foreign government access or extraterritorial judicial orders that might compel a cloud provider to hand over data. By keeping the data in a physically isolated domestic environment, the organization ensures that the information is subject only to the laws and regulations of the local jurisdiction.
This provides a high level of assurance to both the government and the public that sensitive information is being handled with the utmost care. The use of air gapping is also a requirement for certain high level security certifications issued by the national authorities. It represents the highest tier of data protection available in the domestic market.
