Meaning
Surface modification technology using ionized gas at standard pressure to increase surface energy. Factories use atmospheric plasma treatment to prepare low energy plastics for bonding. This process eliminates the need for liquid primers or chemical etching.
Industrial applications often require high adhesion for solvent free inks.
Activation Mechanism
Ionization occurs when high voltage discharge passes through a compressed gas stream. The resulting atmospheric plasma treatment breaks molecular bonds on the substrate to create reactive sites. These sites allow polymers to bond with adhesives that otherwise would fail.
Only the top molecular layers change while the bulk properties remain untouched. High energy species in the gas interact with the surface to introduce oxygen groups. This interaction improves the wetting of the substrate by the coating material.
Precise control over the plasma density ensures uniform treatment across the entire part.
Process Variable
Power output and nozzle distance determine the effectiveness of the gas stream. Maintaining a consistent atmospheric plasma treatment requires monitoring gas flow rates and travel speed. If the nozzle moves too slowly the surface might suffer thermal damage.
When it moves too quickly the activation level falls below the requirement.
Regulatory Alignment
Chinese occupational health standards govern the ozone emissions produced during the discharge. Operators must install local exhaust ventilation to keep atmospheric plasma treatment within safe limits. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment monitors these emissions during factory audits.
Compliance requires documented maintenance of the extraction system.
