Meaning
Incremental forming produces seamless ring-shaped metallic components by reducing the wall thickness and increasing the diameter of a hollow preform. Automated plants use ring rolling to manufacture large flanges and high-strength gears for heavy industry. This process eliminates weld joints and ensures a continuous circumferential grain flow.
Radial Reduction
Opposing rolls squeeze the wall of the preform while axial rolls maintain the height of the expanding ring. The continuous reduction in thickness causes the ring to grow in diameter while maintaining structural uniformity. This method minimizes material waste compared to conventional machining methods.
Because the process is rapid, the material retains its hot-working temperature.
Seamless Contouring
Final mechanical properties are enhanced because the rolling pattern aligns the metal grains with the primary service stresses. This alignment improves both the fatigue and toughness properties of the final component.
Import Inspection
Special industrial components processed by ring rolling are subject to safety audits by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). Imported rings used in pressure vessels must obtain a manufacturing license under the Special Equipment Safety Law before they can be legally sold in the domestic market. A simple customs declaration does not bypass this requirement.
If the testing certificates are not certified by a government-approved laboratory, the General Administration of Customs (GACC) has the authority to return the shipment to its country of origin.
