Meaning
Performance benchmarks established during the initial phase of a manufacturing project assess the capability of a process before it reaches a state of statistical control. A ppk threshold provides a minimum numerical value that a supplier must meet to prove that their machinery can produce parts within specification. Unlike long term capability measures, this index accounts for the total variation observed in the short term data.
Stability Requirement
Pilots and trial runs generate the data needed to calculate this performance index. Because the process may not yet be stable, the calculation uses the actual standard deviation of all samples rather than an estimate derived from sub-group ranges. A requirement of 1.67 is common for safety critical components during the part approval process.
Initial Qualification
Success in meeting the set limit allows a factory to move from prototype production to mass manufacturing. If the value falls short, the engineering team must identify the sources of variation and implement changes to the tooling or raw materials. This gate ensures that high levels of defects do not enter the supply chain at the start of a contract.
Variation Constraint
Factors such as machine vibration or operator skill contribute to the total spread of the data. Identifying these influences early prevents costly rework later.
