Meaning
Forging manipulation decreases the height of a metallic workpiece while increasing its cross-sectional area between flat, unconfined dies. Industrial operators employ open die upsetting to break down cast structures and improve isotropic properties. This operation is the foundational step in manufacturing complex forged parts.
Metal Shaping
Hydraulic presses compress the heated ingot axially to force the metal to expand laterally. This compression closes internal porosity and crushes coarse cast grain structures. The metal undergoes uniform plastic flow when the temperature is maintained within the optimal hot-working window.
If the forging temperature drops below this window, surface cracking occurs.
Strain Distribution
Finite element analysis demonstrates that the strain is highest in the center of the compressed workpiece. This localized concentration ensures maximum deformation and refinement where it is needed most.
Quality Audit
Procurement guidelines of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) mandate the documentation of force and temperature logs for all open die upsetting operations. Foreign contractors must submit these manufacturing records to the domestic purchasing entity before shipping semi-finished forgings. In complete compliance with the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) rules, non-compliant logs allow the buyer to reject the entire batch.
Arbitration regarding these quality disputes is administered by local trade commissions under Chinese civil law.
