Meaning
A free-format message type within the SWIFT network used by financial institutions to send unformatted information or queries to other banks is designated as an MT199. In international trade, this message type is frequently utilized to resolve payment discrepancies, trace missing funds, or request urgent amendments to trade payments. While structured messages are preferred for automated processing, the MT199 remains a flexible tool for handling complex, non-standard communication between banks.
Bank Communication
Financial institutions send these alerts when a transaction is held up due to missing regulatory information or compliance flags. The message allows the sender’s bank to explain the background of a payment directly to the clearing bank. This direct exchange helps to resolve manual holds that might otherwise cause prolonged delays in the supply chain.
Discrepancy Resolution
Treasury departments rely on this transmission when a foreign currency payment to a factory cannot be matched to a specific invoice. When the receiving bank holds the payment because of a name mismatch or an incomplete account number, it will dispatch a query to the originating bank. The originating bank then responds with an MT199 to clarify the beneficiary’s details, enabling the receiving bank to credit the factory’s account.
This quick intervention prevents the factory from putting a hold on production schedules due to unpaid deposits.
Operational Limit
Corporate finance managers must realize that free-format messages require manual intervention to read and process. This reliance on human review means that they are slower to execute than structured automated messages. For this reason, companies should use them as a secondary escalation method rather than a primary payment tracking mechanism.
