Meaning
Automation performance metrics measure the time elapsed between the initiation of a chemical sampling or dispensing command and the actual physical movement of the liquid. This factor, known as liquid handling latency, affects the precision of real-time titration and dosing systems used in high-throughput manufacturing lines. The delay is caused by the mechanical action of pumps, the viscosity of the fluid, and the length of the tubing.
Dispensing Error
Delayed response from the pumps can cause over-dosing or under-dosing if the system does not account for the lag in fluid delivery. High-viscosity chemicals such as concentrated sulfuric acid or organic additives exacerbate this delay, leading to inaccurate concentration measurements. This error must be compensated for in the system software.
Compensation Method
Calibration algorithms adjust the timing of the pump commands based on the fluid viscosity and the system volume to minimize the effect of latency. Using shorter delivery tubes and higher-torque motors also helps reduce the mechanical delay. This compensation improves the accuracy of the automated dosing system.
System Impact
Minimizing the latency allows for tighter control of the bath chemistry and reduces the risk of drift. The resulting stability leads to consistent plating quality. This improvement is critical.
