Meaning
Indirect tax offsets allow businesses to reduce their total tax liability by subtracting taxes paid on purchases from taxes collected on sales. The input value added tax credit provides the mechanism for these deductions within the national value added tax system. Registered taxpayers must obtain valid special value added tax invoices from their suppliers to claim the credit.
If a company fails to collect the correct documentation, the tax paid on raw materials or services becomes a cost.
Invoice Management
Companies must verify every purchase invoice through an official government portal to ensure its authenticity. The input value added tax credit is only valid if the invoice matches the records in the tax bureau’s central database.
Deductible Expense
Only purchases used for taxable business activities are eligible for the credit. The input value added tax credit cannot be claimed for items used for personal consumption or exempt financial services. If a business produces both taxable and exempt goods, it must allocate the credits proportionally.
Verification Deadline
Taxpayers must confirm their invoices within a specific timeframe to secure the right to a deduction. The input value added tax credit expires if the filing is not completed within the statutory period, which is currently three hundred and sixty days from the date of issuance. Monthly filings allow the tax bureau to monitor the balance of input and output taxes in real time.
Excess credits can be carried forward to the next month or, in specific industries, applied for as a cash refund.
