Meaning
Hard gauging tools provide a rapid method for verifying whether a cylindrical hole or bore is within its specified size limits. The go no go plug gauges consist of two calibrated pins where one must fit into the hole and the other must be stopped by the hole. They govern the speed of the inspection process on the production floor by providing an immediate binary result.
These tools are only valid for checking the maximum and minimum material conditions and cannot provide an actual measurement of the diameter.
Field Verification
The go side of the gauge is manufactured to the minimum allowable diameter and should slide into the hole under its own weight. The no go side is made to the maximum allowable diameter and should not enter the hole at all. If the go side does not fit or the no go side enters, the part is defective.
Calibration Cycle
Because these tools experience physical wear from repeated contact with metal parts, they must be checked against a master gauge at regular intervals. Chinese quality standards require a formal calibration log for every set of gauges used in a certified facility.
Pass Fail Logic
Using these gauges allows unskilled operators to perform accurate quality checks without the need for complex instruments. This simplicity reduces the risk of measurement error in high-speed manufacturing environments.
